Police looking for driver of deadly crash that killed pregnant woman

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Police are still looking for a driver accused of leaving the scene of a deadly crash on the east side of Indianapolis.

The crash killed Antoinette Johnson, 23. Family said she was seven months pregnant.

Latasha Johnson said she is trying to hold it together for her family. It was more than a week ago when she lost her daughter and unborn grandchild.

She said the driver is her daughter’s boyfriend. She told 24 Hour News 8 he called her the day after the crash to apologize.

“I’m just very upset right now,” said Johnson, victim’s mother. “Words can’t even explain it right now.”

Demarco Matthews, 31, is still nowhere to be found. Police said he and another passenger took off after crashing his car near the intersection of East New York Street and Bradley Avenue last Wednesday.

Johnson was sitting in the front passenger seat. A fourth person remained at the scene.

“Right now I’m very upset that I got to bury my daughter tomorrow,” said Johnson. “I don’t know how I’m going to be able to hold up, but it’s going to be very hard looking at two people in a casket.”

Johnson said her daughter and Matthews had been in a relationship for about nine months. Her daughter was carrying his baby.

“That’s a hurtful thing when you got to bury a child and a grandchild,” said Johnson.

Johnson said she received a phone call from Matthews just one day after the crash. She said he reassured her that he was going to do the right thing.

“He told me he was sorry. He was going to turn himself in,” said Johnson. “He ain’t did it yet and I’m still waiting.”

Johnson said it has been difficult for her family. Loved ones returned to the scene for a candlelight vigil.

Alvino Gholston said he can’t stop thinking about his sister.

“My sister is a great mother. I love my sister and I wish I could bring her back, but I can’t,” said Johnson.

Johnson leaves behind three kids, all under the age of four.

Her funeral is Saturday at New Birth Ministries located at 1400 English Avenue. The viewing will be from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. The funeral will follow right after until 1 p.m.

If you know the whereabouts of Demarco Matthews you’re asked to call Crime Stoppers at (317) 262- TIPS.
