Video: Backhoe driver leads police on slow-speed chase

MONROE COUNTY, Fla. (CNN) – Here’s something you don’t see every day: a slow-speed police chase involving heavy machinery.

A Florida man is facing multiple charges after the alleged joy-ride in a backhoe. Police say it started when the 59-year-old man dumped boulders on the roadway at the Seven Mile Bridge in the Keys.

He then apparently drove up and down the bridge for an hour and a half, damaging the road and sides of the bridge.

Police gave chase as the driver switched directions several times.

One cruiser was damaged and officers eventually exited the bridge for their own safety, ordering civilian drivers to do the same.

When the backhoe driver finally left the bridge, deputies stopped the machine with spike strips.

The driver was examined at a hospital and taken to jail.
