IRS: Email, texting scams surge 400 percent in 2016

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Email and texting scams designed to trick U.S. taxpayers into providing personal data have surged 400 percent so far this year, according to the IRS.

The emails are designed to look like they’re from the Internal Revenue Service. They get people to click on a link that installs malware on your computer. Scammers then can follow your keystrokes and get personal data.

The IRS does not email taxpayers – it only communicates via regular mail.
