Zionsville cancels classes after water main break

ZIONSVILLE, Ind. (WISH) – A water main break closed down schools in Zionsville Friday morning.

It happened on Cobblestone Drive at Whisper Bay Circle.

Zionsville Schools first made the announcement on its website and social media accounts around 8 a.m. saying classes were canceled due to a “major” break. The tweet from @MyZvilleSchools was sent 10 minutes before the call went out to parents.

In the voicemail, Superintendent Dr. Scott Robison said because of the break officials couldn’t guarantee they would have water pressure to sustain the sprinkler systems in the schools. He said the schools would be dismissing students on hand, adding elementary routes hadn’t yet begun for the morning.

Middle school and high school students were already at school when the decision was made to cancel class.

“This is just incredibly bad timing,” Robison said in the voicemail.

A text was also sent to parents that said, “Waning pressures will trigger sprinkler systems in school.”

As of 8:15 a.m., at least one middle school didn’t know how students would be sent home.

According to a release from Citizens Energy Group, the break disrupted water service at 75 homes, Zionsville High School and Pleasant View Elementary School. Water pressure was restored to the schools around 9:30 a.m. Citizens expected to have the main repaired around 2:30 p.m. and service restored to all customers.
