Hamilton County growth impacting seasonal job pool

NOBLESVILLE, Ind (WISH) – Cities in Hancock County are going the extra mile to find part-time and seasonal workers.

In a matter of weeks, golfers will take to Noblesville’s courses.  Before they do, the city is scrambling to find workers to maintain it.

“It’s been challenging,” Noblesville Parks and Recreational Director Brandon Bennett said. “We left some part-time positions on the table last year because we just couldn’t find enough people.”

This year, the city has upped the pay from minimum wage to $10 an hour. Knowing last year was a struggle, its also posted jobs earlier.

“We’re out advertising now for part-time positions for the summer,” Bennett said.

Noblesville isn’t the only Hamilton County community struggling; so is Fishers.

“We’re having to work harder to find people who are interested in that kind of work,” Fishers Deputy Mayor Leah McGrath said.

Fishers didn’t increase pay. Instead, the city in looking for employees in new places.

“If you’re in the Central Indiana region, hopefully you’ll hear from us, or see that posting,” McGrath said.

Over the past couple of years, a number of companies have come in to Hamilton County, creating competition. So getting people to take city positions has become more difficult.

“I think we’re seeing fewer people take on those part-time, additional second jobs, or other part-time jobs,” McGrath said.

“If you believe in community, if you believe in what we’re doing, it makes it a really fun place to work,” McGrath said. “We like to think we’re a great place to work number one, and I think the way that we run our operation makes people feel like they’re a part of something that’s really big,” Bennett said.
