Proposal to split IPFW leaves music department in limbo

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) – A recent proposal advocating splitting Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne into separate universities does not address the future management of the music department.

The Journal Gazette of Fort Wayne reports that under the proposal, Indiana University would keep control of the School of Medicine, and Purdue University would provide and control all other programs and course offerings. However, Purdue doesn’t offer a music degree, leaving the unit’s relationship with IU’s accomplished music school in question.

Junior music student Shelby Fallis says they have been reassured that music will continue at IPFW, and that current students will receive IU degrees.

According to Purdue spokesman Brian Zink, the legislative body that crafted the proposal was tasked only with making recommendations about management. Task forces will be forming to address specific programs.
