Skateland changes rules after chaotic weekend

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A local skating rink is changing the rules after a chaotic weekend.

The manager of Skateland, Sean Hart, said unsupervised minors will now be turned away at the door.

According to police, a fight started and someone vandalized a police car Saturday after about 100 people gathered at Skateland then moved into the neighborhood near 38th Street and North High School Rd.

Hart said he’s adding security workers, and if any parent drops a kid off, a worker will stop the parent to inform them of the new rule.

He said the crowd formed Saturday after teenagers shared a Facebook post advertising a party at Skateland. According to Hart, Skateland never agreed to host the party.

Employees started turning people away at the door.

“We had kids’ birthday parties in here. We didn’t want all these teenagers in here ruining these kids’ birthday parties and the experiences for the families we’d like to have here,” Hart said.

Police said a fight broke out in the skating rink parking lot and, on a nearby street, someone broke the windshield of a police car.

No one was hurt and no one was arrested.

Hart said the northwest side Skateland started closing at 9 p.m. about five years ago, with the goal of deterring teenagers. He said the rink tries to cater to a younger crowd and promote a family environment.
