Pet Dental Health

Does your dog have bad breath? According to Banfield Pet Hospital, if it smells funny, it’s probably serious. Luckily, there are things you can do at home every day to help your pet have a healthy mouth – and guess what, your kids can play a role. Pet Pals TV’s Patty Spitler chats with Veterinarian Dr. Andrea Sanchez about tips and tricks on how you can help protect your pet against dental disease, and talk about their brand new children’s book, “My Very, Very Smelly Breath.”

February marks National Pet Dental Health Month, and Banfield Pet Hospital is looking to spread further awareness about the importance of good pet dental care. Dental disease is the most common disease Banfield Pet Hospital sees for dogs and cats – in fact, in 2014, 92% of dogs and 84% of cats over the age of three were diagnosed with some form of dental disease. When severe, it can lead to bacterial infections and researchers have seen a correlation between dental disease and chronic diseases of the heart, kidneys, liver, and even organ failure.

Dr. Andrea Sanchez is a senior manager at Banfield Pet Hospital, where she supports ongoing improvement efforts aimed at the well-being of clients, doctors and associates. She has worked in veterinary medicine for 16 years, and has been a veterinarian in small animal general practice since 2007. She is the proud parent of four rescued animals: cats Danny, Pablo and Felix, and dog Frankie.

All proceeds from the book will go to the Banfield Foundation in order to provide preventive and dental care to pets in need.
