Feds request more time to indict retired Delaware Co. sheriff’s deputy

MUNCIE, Ind. (AP) – Federal authorities in Indianapolis are asking a judge for another month to seek formal charges against a retired Delaware County sheriff’s deputy accused of selling more than $8,000 in county-owned ammunition.

Arlan Johnson was charged in February with theft from a government agency receiving federal funds. The U.S. attorney has until March 11 to indict Johnson or otherwise charge him.

The Star Press reports U.S. Attorney Josh Minkler asked in a motion filed Wednesday that the deadline be extended until April 12. The motion states the request is not opposed by Johnson’s attorney, Michael Alexander.

The motion states the two sides have been “engaged in discussing numerous issues.”

Johnson is accused of stealing the ammunition between January 2012 and last Aug. 5. He faces up to 10 years in prison.
