INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Monday is Leap Day and there are some perks to having a birthday once every four years.

Some free events and a new initiative declaration by Mayor Joe Hogsett to get kids active are happening all day. Hogsett is urging parents to make a healthy choice for their family by declaring Monday “Make the Leap for Healthy Kids Day” in Indianapolis. It’s a way to get parents to think about their kids’ health and habits.

Jump IN for Healthy Kids is an initiative to fight childhood obesity in central Indiana. On the website, parents make a pledge to eat five or more fruits and vegetables every day, spend no more than two hours sitting in front of a screen, to be physically active for at least one hour a day, do not drink soda or sugary drinks and also have regular family meals together. Jump IN’s website says if you take those steps your family is on their way to better health.

According to statistics from About.com, the chances of being born on Feb. 29 are 1 in 1,461. Those leap babies can take advantage of a few perks, including free pizza from Pizza Hut or a free spaghetti and meatball meal at Bucca Di Beppo locations. Hard Rock Cafe has an entire menu dedicated to leaplings. You must have a valid ID with most of the deals.
