Woman reports armed police impersonator in Clay Co.

CLAY COUNTY, Ind. (WTHI) – Officials in Clay County say a police impersonator situation was reported Tuesday morning.

The Clay County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call around 10:43 a.m. from a motorist at the intersection of State Road 246 and State Road 159.

The caller said they came upon a woman who reported she had been chased by a man with a gun claiming to be a police officer. The woman told deputies she was on County Road 850 S when she noticed a black SUV behind her with flashing lights on.

“The female stated that there was a brief confrontation with the male and she was able to get away,” a press release from the Clay County Sheriff’s Office said.

She said she pulled over and the man got out of the black SUV. Officials say the man ordered the woman out of her vehicle at gunpoint. She told deputies that she ran through the woods to SR 246 where she was able to flag down a passing vehicle.

“Call 9-1-1 if you’re getting pulled over. Say ‘hey, I’m getting stopped. Is this one of your officers? Is this a real police officer?’ And if it is not, then we’re going to start that way immediately to assist you,” Clay City Deputy Town Marshal Terry Silvers said.
