Man jailed in connection to body found in Hancock County

GREENFIELD (WISH) – Investigators in Hancock County have a person in custody in connection to a body that officers say was dumped on the side of the road, according to 24-Hour News 8’s partners at the Greenfield Daily Reporter.

Jail records show 44-year-old Shawn Hammons of Pendleton was booked in the Hancock County Jail early Wednesday morning, facing preliminary charges of failure to report a dead body. He is currently being held without bond.

Online court records show no official charges have been filed yet.

According to the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office, a 72-hour extension has been filed for discovery with the anticipation of more charges, including murder and robbery, to be filed on Monday.

The Greenfield Daily Reporter says the charges are connected to the man’s body found this week along a rural county road.

Tuesday night, investigators were called to rural Hancock County just east of the airport, after someone saw a body lying on the side of the road. Investigators said 55-year-old Shannon Kitchens of Mccordsville had died of a gunshot wound and apparently was dumped there.

They called the death “suspicious.” Police said the investigation was ongoing but they didn’t believe there was a threat to the public.

The Greenfield Daily Reporter also says investigators searched a home in Fortville in connection to Kitchens’ death, but they didn’t elaborate on why or what they may have found there.

So far, police have not given a timeline of what happened, or what exactly led them to Hammons arrest.Police have also not released what may have led up to the shooting.
