‘Mom voice’ used to get armed intruders to retreat
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Tyra Slaughter spotted intruders walking up to her neighbor’s front door on a Tuesday at 3:00 a.m. Instead of calling police, she confronted the suspects.
When she stepped outside, she noticed three men wearing shoe coverings. One had a rifle and the other wore a mask.
“What are you guys doing?” says Slaughter on the surveillance tape.
After being called out, the men started walking back to a pick-up truck. A woman sat in the driver’s seat of the getaway truck. The moment the men got in, she pulled off. Just before they pulled out of the sight of cameras, Slaughter’s boyfriend tried to stop them.
He would be too late. The suspects fired a parting shot as they left. There were no reported injuries. Slaughter adds that her neighbors later thanked her for questioning the suspects.
Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department has yet to identify the suspects.
24-Hour News 8 asked Slaughter if she would confront someone again if faced with similar situation.
“It happened so fast, it didn’t dawn on me what was going on. My protective mother instincts kicked in,” said Slaughter.
She added that she didn’t realize the suspect had a gun until she later looked at the video. Although the conversation between Slaughter and the suspects happened quickly, she believes her motherly tone convinced the suspects to leave.
“Using my firm mother voice, maybe it reminded them of their mother or grandmother,” said Slaughter.
