Have another bowl! It’s National Cereal Day!

(WHTM) – Monday is National Cereal Day.

According to the website, nationalcerealday.com, the invention of breakfast cereal came in the mid-1800’s to supplement a “poor American diet” packed with protein, booze and caffeine.

Now, 2.7 billion boxes of cereal are sold every year. Which is enough to wrap around the earth 13 times.

The website says 49 percent of the people in the U.S. start their day with a bowl of cereal every morning.

According to a new poll by Ranker, these are the Best Breakfast Cereals of All Time as determined by over 88,000 votes:

  1. Frosted Flakes
  2. Cinnamon Toast Crunch
  3. Lucky Charms
  4. Honey Nut Cheerios
  5. Froot Loops
  6. Cap’n Crunch
  7. Apple Jacks
  8. Fruity Pebbles
  9. Cap’n Crunch’s Crunch Berries
  10. Rice Krispies

It is a household staple that even the astronauts on Apollo 11 ate while in space. Since the lack of gravity kept them from pouring it into a bowl with milk, the cereal was mixed with fruit and pressed into cubes.
