Become a storm spotter for free

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – The weather is showing signs spring is on the way. That also means the potential for severe weather is also here.

24-Hour News 8’s Storm Track 8 weather team and the National Weather Service (NWS) have the latest technology to track weather, but they could also use the help of trained storm spotters on the ground.

Franciscan St. Francis Health – Indianapolis is hosting a free storm spotter class Tuesday. The class, which is open to the public, will be held in the hospital’s basement auditorium from 2 to 3:30 p.m.

A NWS representative will be at the training to describe cloud and wind patterns associated with severe weather, teach participants how to interpret weather radar data, and offer tips on how to remain safe during severe weather.

According to the National Weather Service website, storm spotter classes will also be held tonight in Madison County and Rush County. The Madison County training class will be held at the Hoosier Park Racetrack (State Road 9, Anderson) from 7 to 9 p.m. The Rush County class will be held at the Rush Memorial Hospital Medical Office Building Kenneth L.Earnest Family Conference Center Lower Level (110 E. 13th St., Rushville) also from 7 to 9 p.m.

According to the NWS, the United States experiences 10,000 severe thunderstorms, 5,000 floods and more than 1,000 tornadoes every year. Storm spotters help alert weather forecasters of things radars can’t pick up.
