21 facing drug-related charges in Franklin

FRANKLIN, Ind. (WISH) — Police arrested 21 people as part of a month-long drug dealing investigation in Johnson County.

The Franklin police have been making the arrests over month-long period. Authorities say some are drug users and all are drug dealers.

The small city of Franklin was quiet on Wednesday. Most of the chatter came from places like Benjamin’s Coffee where regulars come to catch up.

“We know their orders. We know their names, so a lot of familiar faces everyday,” said Benjamin’s Coffee owner Ashley Shively.

Customers chatted over sandwiches and drinks, tucked away in downtown Franklin. But outside the cozy corners of the coffee spot, something disheartening is brewing in the community; meth, heroin, drugs of all kinds.

“It makes you wonder what people are up to outside their personal lives, what they struggle with. We don’t see them outside. I think it creates a little fear,” said Shively.

Fear is what police are working to eliminate. During a news conference, officials revealed the mug shots of the 21 suspected of drug dealing. Men and women, young and old.

“With those people off the streets, I think we can see a reduction in crime in a lot of things: thefts, burglaries and people doing things to try and get drugs,” said Johnson County Chief Deputy Prosecutor Joe Villanueva.

Villanueva says police arrested two types of people. Those who deal for money will face the stiffest penalties. And there are those who deal to fund their addiction.

“The fact that they’re off the streets and those that are addicted can get some kind of treatment program, it does make the streets safer,” said Villanueva.

Safer is an effort that is welcomed at Benjamin’s.

“It creates a safer environment of people aren’t out there doing anything illegal or being under the influence of something like driving or something that would cause anybody harm,” said Shively.

This is the second drug roundup in the area in less than six months. Back in September, law enforcement arrested almost 50 people from all over the county.

Villanueva encourages those with addiction problems to call the Johnson County Prosecutors Office, where they have resources and programs that could help.
