Anonymous drug tip line established in Morgan County

MORGAN COUNTY, Ind. (WISH) – As the entire state deals with the heroin epidemic, there’s a big push happening now in Morgan County to keep drugs out.

Officials started a new drug task force: a collaborative effort between the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office, the city of Martinsville and its police department, Healthier Morgan County and the Morgan County Substance Abuse Council.

As part of that task force, they’ve established a new line of communication between officers and the people they serve.

It’s an anonymous drug tip line, designed to allow anyone to call in to or text investigators anything they may know about drug activity in the area.

“There’s an overwhelming amount of people who want to report the problems, but they want to be anonymous and don’t want to be involved, so this will give them that avenue,” said Captain Brent Worth, Morgan County Sheriff’s Department.

Worth says they’ve seen an increase in heroin use, as communities across central Indiana and across the nation as well.

“Drugs don’t discriminate. It can happen to anyone,” said Shannon Kohl, Martinsville’s Mayor. “It’s a big problem, and we all need to work together to try to fix it.”

Officials say they’re working on both prevention and enforcement. They’re also thinking ahead as the last leg of the new I-69 will come through Morgan County in some way.

“We’re forward thinking in this process,” said Worth. “Our community will be having I-69 come though Morgan County, which is at the southern part right now. We’re beefing up our resources where we can engage in interdiction, using K-9 officers and interdiction teams, to try to keep [drugs] from filtering through our community.”

Worth says they’ve also received grants to increase their K-9 units.
