2nd baby dropped off at fire station under Safe Haven law

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A second child has been surrendered in Indianapolis under the state’s Safe Haven law.

According to IFD, a woman brought a 30-day-old boy to a fire station Friday morning.

She asked to give custody of the infant to Child Protective Services.

Officials said the baby is clean, fed and uninjured.

“Today’s incident clearly illustrates the importance of the Indiana Safe Haven Law and the fact that it works when used – and in the manner in which it is intended,” IFD said in a media release.

The Safe Haven Law allows people to abandon a newborn without fear of prosecution.

It was used for the first time a couple weeks ago.

All IFD stations have clearly visible Safe Place signs on their buildings. It’s a separate program, but complements the Safe Haven law, officials say.
