A quiz can hold up your tax return

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — The Indiana Department of Revenue (DOR) has stopped more than $100 million in fraudulent refund attempts through an identity protection program that started in 2014.

Here is how it will work: Hoosier taxpayers who have filed are randomly selected for a quiz. The test lasts about two minutes and covers basic personal information the taxpayer should know. For example, three to four short questions should have answers that only you can answer.

Those selected receive a letter in the mail from DOR.

If you have not filed your taxes and you receive the quiz, don’t fill it out. It’s likely that someone has filed your taxes. You should call the DOR immediately and inform the operators that you have not filed your taxes.

“I think it’s questionable,” said taxpayer Sarah Manierre. “I think if they are going to do that they should ask everybody.”

According to the DOR, there is no need to test every Hoosier because if the quiz did test everyone, it would make it easier for identity thieves to manipulate the system.

If you have questions about how the process works, you can visit the DOR’s website or call the department for assistance at 317-233-1642.

This process only includes state tax returns.
