DNR hosts archery tournament for students

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — You can call it the “Hunger Games effect.”

Archery programs are gaining in popularity in Indiana and thousands of competitors put their skills to the test on Saturday.

The Indiana State National Archery in the Schools Program tournament took place at the Indiana State Fairgrounds.

The tournament is hosted by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.

According to the DNR, learning to use a bow and arrow can better prepare kids to use pencil and paper.

“Teaching that to young people teaches them poise, teaches them concentration, teaches them practice, which all leads to a better student in the classroom,” said Lt. William Browne.

DNR officials hope the program keeps growing.

Their goal is to add at least 45 schools a year.
