Burglar at large after $18K in cash, jewelry, electronics stolen

MADISON COUNTY, Ind. (WISH) – Police are looking for thieves and $18,000 in stolen property after a string of burglaries. The break-ins happened last Thursday in rural Madison County, according to police.

In each case, police said someone tossed a brick through a window and then reached inside to unlock the door. Whoever did it caused hundreds of dollars in property damage before stealing electronics, jewelry and-from one home–$9,000 dollars in cash.

Madison County Sheriff Scott Mellinger said all three burglaries happened in broad daylight.

“If at all possible, get with your neighbors and discuss how important it is to watch out for one and other,” Mellinger said.

One of the crimes happened just down the street from John Lehman, who describes the area as a quiet farming community.

“With times the way they are, nothing surprises me,” Lehman said.

Detectives in Grant County, just north of Madison County, are also investigating a string of recent broad daylight break-ins. Officials said, in the Grant County burglaries, thieves took jewelry, cash and electronics.

Madison County detectives are working with Grant County to determine if the crimes are connected.
