74-year-old believed to have had medical issue prior to crash

HOWARD COUNTY, Ind. (WISH) — A 74-year-old man is believed to have had a medical episode, leading to crash in Howard County.

Investigators said Charles and Velma McFarland, both of Gas City, were traveling westbound on State Road 22 in Howard County on Thursday.

As they approached County Road 400 East, Charles McFarland is believed to have had a medical episode, veering off the side of the road, hitting a culvert, going airborne, striking another vehicle, then flipping.

Charles McFarland was pronounced dead on the scene. Velma McFarland was flown by a medical helicopter to Indianapolis with non-life threatening injuries. Another driver involved was not injured.

Everyone involved was wearing a seat belt. Drugs and alcohol are not believed to be factors in the crash.

The crash remains under investigation.
