Local police departments warn of spike in car break-ins

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) –  Police departments around Central Indiana are warning of a spike in car break-ins.

Fishers is the latest city to tell drivers to lock up their cars and hide their belongings.

Fishers Police said just in the past month, they’re seeing a jump in car thefts. Police tell us crooks don’t have any new tricks, they’re still looking for visible valuables or unlocked cars. Latest numbers from Fishers Police show there were 25 car break-ins in January, 41 in February and 11 so far in March.

Wednesday, Carmel Police told 24-Hour News 8 they arrested a person who they say was breaking into cars. Last week, someone spotted a man trying to open the door of a car around 3 a.m. and immediately called police. Police eventually found him with stolen items inside his car and arrested him.

Local police departments say drivers should be vigilant about locking their cars, and keeping belongings out of site.  A visible purse or a wallet can be temptation for a criminal to break in, and an unlocked car door just makes it easy. Police tell drivers to avoid parking outside, but if you have to, park in a well lit area.  Police also recommend people consider installing an alarm system or anti-theft device in their car.

The Hancock County Sheriff’s Department has also reported a string of car break-ins. Irvington residents said they’ve noticed recent car break-ins as well.
