Injured officer speaks out after shooting, praises God

WOODRUFF, SC (WSPA) – An officer from Woodruff South Carolina, injured in the line of duty is praising God for helping him escape a potentially deadly situation.

Woodruff Police Officer Darrell Dawkins was struck in his arm March 14 while serving a drug warrant at a home. Police say Dennis Alexander shot Dawkins as he entered the home.

Dawkins did not fire back because a child was inside the room with Alexander.

“You just try to do the best you can with what you got and react and through God being with me, we made the right decision,” said Dawkins.

Police say Alexander, who is facing charges of attempted murder of a police officer and crack cocaine distribution, dropped the gun after he fired and asked officers not to shoot.

Alexander’s sister said her brother was previously threatened and thought it was that person entering the home when he fired that shot.

Dawkins suffered minimal damage and was treated and released the same day.
