Take a ride to Mexico with UberPASSPORT

SAN DIEGO (WISH) – Uber is launching a new service that transcends the U.S.

For the first time, the ride sharing service is allowing one-way travel from San Diego to Tijuana, Mexico.

“Connecting and celebrating great cities, like San Diego and Tijuana, is right in Uber’s wheelhouse,” said Head of Global Operations for Uber, Ryan Graves. “Their rich cultures and vibrant economies are seamlessly connected, and we hope that by making the cross-border trip just as seamless, we can unlock even more travel opporunities and make the experience better for our riders.”

Riders can order an Uber like normal, but bring all of their travel documents and cross into Mexico.

“In our interconnected binational region, travel between San Diego and Tijuana is a daily occurrence for more than 300,000 individuals,” said Paola Avila, vice president of International Business Affairs for the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce.

UberPASSPORT vehicles can accommodate up to 4 people. You can split the fare to Mexico with them. Here are the prices depending on where you go:

  • $90 or $22.50 per person if split
  • $100 or $25 per person if split
  • $160 or $40 per person if split

It breaks down like this: $4 base fee + 30 cents per minute + $2.35 per mile + $20 border crossing fee.

Here’s the catch, this trip is only one way. To return to the U.S. you have to take a Uber to the border, cross the border in the pedestrian path and then catch an Uber in the U.S. home.

If you don’t see the UberPASSPORT opt-in option in your Uber app, you can opt in here.
