IMS Pagoda standing tall since 1913

SPEEDWAY, Ind. (WISH) – The first Pagoda at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway was built in 1913. It was a four-tier tower with a Japanese design.

In 1925 it was deliberately set on fire to make way for a larger Pagoda, with a similar design for the 1926 race.

Officials felt the original Pagoda was built too close to the track, so the new pagoda was father back from the main straight away. In 1957, a tall, steel glassed structure was built and stood until 1998.

The current Pagoda at IMS honors the original Japanese design and is home to race control, timing, scoring, broadcast booths and suits.
