Man dies after shootout with police in Fort Wayne

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) A man is dead after an exchange of gunfire with police officers near Barr Street, on Fort Waynes south side Sunday evening.

FWPD Spokesman Officer John Chambers said officers responded to a report of gunfire near AutoZone, 310 Rudisill Boulevard, at 9:38 p.m.

When an FWPD officer and ISP trooper arrived they spotted a man with a gun. As they gave chase near Rudisill and Barr the man began shooting at the officers. The officers fired back, fatally hitting the man behind a restaurant.

The name of suspect has not been released. Investigators have not said if the city officer, the trooper, or both fired the fatal shot.

Indiana State Police Spokesman Sgt. Ron Galaviz said a second person inside AutoZone was struck by the suspects initial gunfire.

On Monday afternoon, WANE-TV spoke with FWPD Spokesperson Michael Joyner who said the suspected gunman opened fire in the AutoZone during a domestic situation. Joyner said the person shot was not the intended target, but was someone trying to intervene.

That person was taken to a hospital in serious condition.

A witness told WANE-TV they were sitting in the drive-thru at a nearby restaurant and heard 18 to 20 gunshots.

Chambers confirmed no officers were hurt.

The incident is under investigation.
