Family, church look for closure after pedestrian killed in hit-and-run

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Police are searching for one, possibly two, drivers involved in a fatal hit-and-run Monday night on the north side.

Shana Elliott was walking home from work when she was hit.

According to IMPD, the woman was hit by up to three vehicles. The first driver stayed on scene and called 911.

The second and possibly third drivers left the scene.

Tuesday the family of the 24-year-old victim and her church are looking for closure as they begin mourning her death.

“Great girl, had many aspirations. She loved setting goals,” God’s Grace Community Church Sr. Pastor Steven Thompson said.

Pastor Thompson has known Elliott her whole life.

“Shana, she’s going to be greatly missed, her smile, her laugh,” Thompson said.

He’s remembering the good times she had growing up in the church.

“Each time we have holidays, Shana would love to come to the holiday dinners and she’d be the smile and the laugh of the party and having a good time,” Thompson said.

Elliot was killed late Monday night at the intersection of 86th St. and Township Line Rd.

She had just left work and was walking home.

“She was getting off, heading home, this is when we heard of the tragic news,” Thompson said.

Pastor Thompson said her family is hopeful those responsible will come forward.

“We want to bring healing, we don’t have any hate, we bring a heart of forgiveness to this person, but we want them to do what’s morally right and that’s turn themselves in,” Thompson said. “We offer forgiveness to this person, we’re not out with a hammer and a nail, but we do want respect,” he said.

Respect for a young woman loved by her family, including her parents and six siblings.

“They are missing her terribly at this point in time, I can’t imagine what all they’re going through,” Thompson said.

Witnesses described one of the fleeing vehicles as an older brown work van, with a ladder on the back.
