Ex-Bloomington parks employee gets jail time for thefts

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – A former office manager for the Bloomington Parks Department has been sentenced to 24 months in federal prison after pleading guilty to stealing more than $430,000.

Judith Seigle was sentenced Wednesday. The 53-year-old was charged with embezzling $400,000 from the city parks foundation charity and taking another $30,000 from department operating funds. The (Bloomington) Herald-Times reports that the thefts happened from 2001 until she was fired in October. The judge also ordered her to pay restitution.

Seigle’s attorney had requested she not be incarcerated so she could continue caring for her husband, who has muscular dystrophy and is in a wheelchair.

Seigle testified during the sentencing hearing that she stole and spent the money on shopping and eating out because it comforted her and relieved stress.
