HCSO warns of jury duty scam

HAMILTON COUNTY, Ind. (WISH) – The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents to be aware of a returning telephone scam.

The “jury duty scam” opens victims up to theft and identify theft, said Hamilton County Sheriff Mark Bowen.

Bowen says the scammer calls claiming to work for the sheriff’s office and tells the victim there is an arrest warrant in their name for failure to report for jury duty.

The scammer will then either pressure the victim into sending money, either by prepaid credit card or wire transfer. They may also ask the victim for confidential information to “verify” the warrant.

Bowen said arrest warrants in Hamilton County are never served by telephone.

He also reminds residents to not give out private information such as date of birth, social security number or credit card numbers over the phone.

If you think you’ve received a potential scam call, contact Hamilton County Communications at 317-773-1282 to be connected to the appropriate law enforcement agency.
