Indy 500 drivers pull double duty on Memorial weekend

SPEEDWAY, Ind. (WISH) – Four drivers have done what is known as the “double duty” on the Sunday of Memorial weekend competing in the Indianapolis 500 and then flying to Charlotte to compete in the Coca-Cola 600 in the NASCAR race.

John Andretti was the first to do it in 1994. Tony Stewart, Robbie Gordon and Kurt Busch followed and did both races.

Stewart had the most successful double duty attempt in 2001. He placed 6th at Indy and placed 3rd at Charlotte, completing all 1100 miles.
