Lafayette man rolls vehicle after hitting speeds of 100+ mph

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) – West Lafayette police said a Lafayette man rolled his vehicle after hitting speeds of at least 100 mph.

Sgt. Stason Wiete tells News 18 it started when an officer saw 29-year-old Christopher Michael Smith make some quick lane changes on U.S. 231 near Airport Road just before 7 p.m. When they tried to pull him over, Smith sped off.

Because of rush hour traffic and wet roads, officers quickly called off the chase before Lindberg Road.

“Bottom line is the big consideration is public safety,” said Sgt. Wiete. “If the pursuit is going to put the public at risk, then we’re definitely going to terminate immediately.”

Sgt. Wiete said when Smith tried to turn left onto Cumberland, he lost control and rolled his car. He adds Smith tried to run away, but was later arrested.

West Lafayette police say Smith is wanted on a felony burglary warrant out of Fountain County as well as being a habitual traffic violator. He was in the Tippecanoe County Jail as of late Thursday night.
