Robbery suspects face additional charges after IMPD-involved shooting

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Two teenagers accused of robbing a gas station could face more charges after a shooting involving an Indianapolis police officer.

It happened just before 1 a.m. Thursday at Thornton’s gas station in the 6000 block of West Washington Street.

Miguel Duran-Vasquez, 18, and a 17-year-old face preliminary charges of robbery and resisting law enforcement.

Duran-Vasquez also faces a preliminary charge of possession of marijuana.

Prosecutors could still file more charges against them.

Police say the 17-year-old pulled a gun from his waistband when police tried to detain him. An officer opened fire, hitting the teen. He was taken to the hospital and last listed in serious condition.

Per protocol, the officer who pulled the trigger, Douglas Himmel, is on administrative leave and is expected to return soon, IMPD says.
