Busy section of Monon closed, detours posted

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Utility crews are closing a popular section of the Monon Trail starting Monday. The closure will only be in effect for about 48 hours but it’s happening at one of the busiest sections of the trail.

Indianapolis Power and Light is doing utility work in the area near 54th to 61st Street.

There will be a detour route for that section posted on the trail. It will either tell people to use the Winthrop Avenue route on the west end or the Carvel Avenue route on the east side of the Monon.

Closures could also be happening along the Monon trail in Carmel, but that’s because the city says a section there may be getting too crowded.

City leaders are reportedly concerned about traffic on the Monon near city center and the arts & design district. So they have hired a design company to come up with plans to widen the Monon through Carmel’s downtown.

There could also be work soon along the Monon in Westfield.

Westfield and Hamilton County are trying to connect some sections of the trail within a year.

They’re hoping for those changes as well as the construction of a pedestrian bridge for the trail to extend over State Road 32 by 2019.

First thing is the changes here in Indianapolis. So if you plan on using the trail over the next few days watch out for IPL workers.
