Community steps in to help family of baby Shaylyn Ammerman

SPENCER,Ind. (WISH) – Two businesses are taking it upon themselves to give Shaylyn Ammerman’s family some relief as the one-year-old’s parents plan her funeral.

Several GoFundMe pages were set up online to help the Shaylyn’s family cover the costs, but the pages are no longer needed.

West & Parrish & Pedigo Funeral Home is organizing Shaylyn’s services. The company decided to do so free of charge.

One of the owners told 24-Hour News 8 that the funeral home never asks for money if the death involves a child and Shaylyn would be no different.

Sexton Wilbert in Bloomington is the company that designed the casket and vault for Shaylyn. The owners there also decided to not charge the family.

One of the owners lives in Owen County and said the story of what happened to Shaylyn has affected everyone in the community. Both businesses owners declined to do an interview.

They said they didn’t make their decision for attention, they said they did it because not charging the family is the right thing to do.

Along Morgan Street in Spencer, several businesses are using their marquee signs to show support.

The sign outside Edwards Farm Supply read, “Prayers for our community.” When told about how the funeral services for Shaylyn were covered at no cost, owner Michael Edwards said he wouldn’t expect any less from his town.

“It doesn’t really surprise me. I mean it’s awesome obviously you know, But it doesn’t surprise me,” he said. “We feel like it’s our job to take care of each other.”

Edwards went on to say that Shaylyn’s story is on the minds of most of his customers. He said he used his sign to ask for prayers for the whole community because he said the pain of knowing what happened to Shaylyn has affected everyone in town.

Shaylyn’s visitation starts Wednesday March 30 at 3:00 pm at Christian Life Center in Spencer. The funeral starts at 7:00 on Wednesday. Both services are open to the public.
