Date set for return of Indiana personalized plate program

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – The Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles will bring back their personalized license plate program on April 1.

The legal battle surrounding Indiana’s program has been ongoing since July 2013 when former BMV Commissioner Scott Waddell suspended the state’s personal license plate (PLP) program following a lawsuit filed by Greenfield Police Corporal Rodney Vawter. Judge James Osborn’s ruling included a series of contradictory plate denials uncovered by I-Team 8, which were used as evidence in the case.

Kent Abernathy announced that the plates would return.

“I am pleased that we are able to return this very popular program to the public” said Abernathy. “Beginning this Friday, customers who have been waiting for a new PLP will be able visit a branch or go online to apply for one,” Abernathy said.

According to the release,  online applications will be available to those registering a new vehicle or renewing their registration for the year. Anyone wanting to switch out their current plate will need to visit a license branch. If you currently have a PLP you will be able to continue renewing or may choose to apply for a new one.
