Santa Fe man finds drunk college student passed out in daughter’s bedroom

SANTA FE (AP) – It was an eerie wake-up call for a young girl after a college student wandered into her room and passed out at the foot of her bed.

It surprised neighbors in this area near Paseo De Peralta and North Guadalupe Street in Santa Fe.

“It horrifies us that we’re staying in a neighborhood where something like this would happen,” said Mary Walden.

Santa Fe Police say a drunk college student from Massachusetts wandered into a stranger’s home Saturday morning.

They say 22-year-old Garret Curran walked in after opening a flimsy front door and passed out at the foot of a 7-year-old girl’s bed.

The girl woke up when she heard strange noises.

“The daughter woke the father up, he walked her back to her bedroom and found a young man, laying on her floor,” said Capt. Jerome Sanchez of Santa Fe Police Dept.

The father tried to get him to leave. That’s when things started to escalate.

“He wasn’t waking up. The father then tried to remove him. As he tried to remove him, the young man woke up and started to struggle with the father,” said Sanchez.

That fight led to cuts and bruises on Curran’s face before the father got Curran out of his house.

“He was able to get the young man out and was able to hold him until police got there,” said Sanchez.

He’s facing charges of burglary, trespassing and child abuse and neighbors are breathing a sigh of relief.

“I’m glad they arrested this guy is what I’m hearing. I’m hoping it doesn’t happen again,” said Jim Cooper.

“You don’t want people like that running around your neighborhood,” said Mary Walden.

Police say the girl is perfectly fine. She wasn’t harmed in any way.
