Monticello city officials walk a mile in their shoes

MONTICELLO, Ind. (WLFI) – Volunteers, including Monticello city officials, are spending the day experiencing what it’s like to have a disability.

This is the third year for the Monticello “Walk a Mile in My Shoes” challenge. The event shines the spotlight on how the city can improve accessibility for those with disabilities.

Volunteers can choose to be in a wheelchair, have their arm in a sling or wear ear plugs.

Monticello Clerk-Treasurer Jim Mann says being deaf for the day really opened his eyes.

“I guess I’ve realized they want to be a part of society. They want to do things that others without impairments do,” Mann said.

Volunteers are meeting Wednesday night to talk about their experiences throughout the day, and what changes can be made to the city.
