Suspect in critical condition after standoff in Speedway

SPEEDWAY, Ind. (WISH) — A man is in critical condition after a six-hour standoff with police in Speedway.

Indiana State Police assisted the Speedway Police Department with the case.

ISP said a man wanted on a warrant barricaded himself inside of a van with a shotgun near the area of 18th Street and MacArthur Lane. ISP said the warrant was out of Knox County for possession of marijuana and that Speedway police had gotten a tip he was in the area. After making contact with the suspect, police said he immediately pulled out a shotgun.

The suspect has been identified as 57-year-old Douglas Gaultney of Knox County. Police are unsure if Gaultney fired a shot.

The standoff began around 1 p.m. Thursday. SWAT and negotiators were called to the scene. Police attempted to get Gaultney out of the van by using tear gas.

Gunfire erupted on the scene around 7 p.m. Police said Gaultney exited the vehicle, reached into the vehicle for the shotgun, then officers fired and struck him.

Gaultney was taken to Sidney & Lois Eskenazi Hospital where he remains in critical condition.
