Former deputy town marshal charged for murder of wife

CLINTON COUNTY, Ind. (WLFI) – A man suspected of killing his wife in Frankfort last weekend has been formally charged.

Fifty-six-year-old Keith Smith was charged Thursday with one count of murder. He entered an automatic plea of not guilty.

Police believe Smith shot and killed his wife, Lisa Smith, in their home on West Green Street in Frankfort on March 26.

According to court documents, Smith and his wife had an argument and he references a suicide pact. Smith told police he got his gun to demonstrate how to use it, but he pulled the trigger and shot her.

Smith said he meant to point the gun at himself. The gun used in the incident was Smith’s old firearm he used as a Colfax deputy town marshal.

Smith was appointed a lawyer in court Thursday. His trial date is set for July 26.
