Six dead dogs found in home, 10 more living in mounds of feces

MUNCIE, Ind. (WISH) — The Delaware County sheriff is looking for the owner of six dead dogs and ten others found living in deplorable conditions Thursday.

Animal care workers said someone called to report a dog standing in a pool of water. A shelter worker rushed to the address, 10310 East County Line Road North in Delaware County, and found the dogs, some of which are malnourished.

“Most of the dogs, if they weren’t living in five to six inches of rainwater, they were living in literal mounds of their own feces and urine,” Muncie Animal Care Superintendent Phil Peckinpaugh said.

Peckenpaugh said four of the dead dogs were stuffed in garbage bags or empty pet food bags.

Detectives said someone told them the dog owner is out of town. They’re not convinced that’s true, so they’re still searching for him.

“It’s been on my mind quite a bit. Last night, early this morning, and it will be for the next several weeks,” Peckinpaugh said.

Peckinpaugh said he doesn’t see any major medical problems and the dogs will be evaluated by a state veterinarian this weekend. Some of the dogs are beagles and some are cane corso mastiffs.

Animal care workers said they’ll start looking into long-term homes for the dogs next week.
