Concrete wall blown over by wind crushes car; man inside survives

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A man was hurt Saturday afternoon when strong winds blew a wall on top of his car. It happened around 4:45 p.m. near the intersection of 86th Street and Westfield Boulevard at the Sprint store.

Photos show the car pancaked by the concrete wall.

Bystanders helped care for the man until paramedics arrived. Indianapolis fire officials say they found him sitting in the Sprint store. They say he had just stepped into his car when the wall, which holds a Chipotle restaurant sign, fell. He was able to get out on his own, according to officials.

A witness says it’s a miracle the driver survived.

“If he were sitting up straight I don’t think he would have survived,” Peter Courtney, who rushed to help the driver, said. “It crushed the car. It’s like a 10-ton sign. I was like, ‘Hey man, you’re going to pull through this for your daughter.’ I think he did. I hope to God he’s OK tonight.”

Fire officials say the man only suffered a cut. He was taken to an area hospital in good condition.
