Wilbur Shaw has long history with IMS

SPEEDWAY, Ind. (WISH) – Aside from being a three time Indianapolis winner in 1937, 1939 and in 1940, Wilbur Shaw was an important figure in Indianapolis Motor Speedway history.

Shaw was born in Shelbyville Indiana in 1902 and made his first start at the Indy 500 in 1927. He finished fourth with co-driver Louie Meyer. Shaw retired from driving during World War II, but assisted in the sale of the Speedway to Tony Hulman in 1945.

Shaw served as president of IMS until his 1954 death in a plane crash.
