Couple rescued after boat capsizes in Wabash River

PITTSBURG, Ind. (WLFI) – Two people were rescued from the Wabash River after their boat capsized Sunday afternoon.

It happened just before 4 p.m. in the Wabash River, upstream from the Pittsburg boat ramp.

Officers said 32-year-old Mark Green of Flora and 25-year-old Alicia Tyvand of Monitcello were able to make it to shore, but were wet and stranded.

Using a boat, a conservation officer and a Carroll County Sheriff’s Deputy were able to make it to the couple and transported them to safety.

Once the couple was safe on shore, officers returned and were able to recover the boat.

Greene was cited for failure to display his boat registration.

Although the weather is improving, conservation officers said the currents are stronger now following the recent rains. They are asking boaters to make sure the equipment is big enough to keep boaters safe.

According to the DNR, a small boat may work well during low water, or even normal water levels, but not be safe to use during high water levels.
