Hearings set on proposed South Shore fare increases

CHESTERTON, Ind. (AP) – The agency that runs the South Shore commuter trains in northwest Indiana is planning a series of public hearings on a proposed 2.5 percent fare increase to pay for upcoming improvement projects.

The Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District has scheduled five meetings, starting Tuesday at the South Bend International Airport and finishing April 12 at the Michigan City Hall. If approved, the new fares would take effect on June 15 and continue for two years. The new fares would apply to all stations but Hegewisch. Metra controls Hegewisch fares.

People also can send in comments by mail or online. Comments must be received by April 27.

The NICTD board is scheduled to act on the fare increase on May 20. The train line runs from South Bend to Chicago.
