Residents ‘impressed’ with IPL after outages

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — IPL is still making progress after Saturday’s wind storm knocked out power to nearly 60,000 homes and businesses.

IPL says high winds knocked over trees and utility poles, causing the outages.

In some areas of the city, power is still a luxury.

“Power was fine here. Across the street some people lost power but we’ve been good so far,” said Paul Breece, who lives on the city’s northeast side.

Elsewhere, homes are still on generator power, and other areas are still being cleaned up.

“Three days has been hard. When you have little kids you want heat and you want the refrigerator to work and the stove and all the convenience items,” said Molly Fugate, who also lives on the northeast side.

Fugate’s neighbor’s tree knocked out power to most of the neighborhood.

“It could certainly be a lot worse. I’m very thankful that no one was injured and no homes were hit,” Fugate said.

IPL brought in 10 crews from out of state to restore power. The crews are working around the clock.

IPL says they can’t just flip a switch, some of the power lines are entangled in downed trees.

“Honestly I couldn’t be more impressed with the outpouring of workers. IPL is doing a great job,” Fugate said.

If power crews had to clear debris, they will not remove it. They say getting the chopped up wood cleared is the homeowners responsibility.
