Report: Heat wave could kill as many as 11,000 people in 2030

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – A scientific assessment on climate change says a heat wave could kill as many as 11,000 people in the year 2030.

The Obama Administration released the report, “The Impacts of Climate Change on Human Health in the United States” on Monday.

The report was developed over three years by 100 experts in public heath and climate-change science. Representatives from the EPA, NASA and the Department of Defense developed the report.

According to the report, extreme heat can be expected to cause an increase in the number of premature deaths, from thousands to tens of thousands, each summer.

Researchers estimate in the summer of 2100, heat related deaths will reach 27,000.

The report also said people should expect air pollution and airborne allergens to increase in the coming years, worsening allergy and asthma conditions. It also said climate change will intensify drought, wildfires, and flooding related to extreme precipitation and hurricanes.

The Obama Administration said the report reinforces that climate change is a major threat to the health of the American people, not just in the future but right now.CNN contributed to this report.
