5 cases of mumps reported on Purdue campus

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WISH) – University officials say they have five possible cases of mumps at their West Lafayette campus on Wednesday.

The university is working with the Tippecanoe County Health Department and the Indiana State Department of Health to notify anyone who may have been in contact with those who have confirmed cases. Members of the university are encouraged to check their vaccination records.

It is recommended that you be vaccinated with two doses of the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine, or MMR. Mumps is caused by a virus and symptoms usually appear 16-18 days after infection.

Students and staff members with symptoms should stay home and call the Purdue Student Health Center before visiting.

Earlier this year several other colleges reported cases, including IUPUI, IU and Butler University.
