ISP trooper fired for preaching during stops

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A senior trooper with Indiana State Police has been fired for preaching his faith during traffic stops.

Brian Hamilton, a 14-year veteran with ISP, has been terminated following a second complaint in less than 18 months.

Hamilton was told in writing in August 2014 that he was not to question citizens on their religious beliefs or provide religious pamphlets.

ISP was named in lawsuit following the first complaint.

Another citizen complained on Jan. 14, 2016, again resulting in a lawsuit.

“While all of us – citizen and police officer – enjoy the right to freedom of religion and freedom of speech, there are appropriate and proper restrictions placed on agents of the State related to their actions while engaged in their official duties,” said ISP Superintendent Doug Carter. “While I respect Mr. Hamilton’s religious views I am also charged to respect every citizen’s rights and the best way forward for the citizens of Indiana, and for Mr. Hamilton, was to end his employment as a state police officer.”
