Real estate agent convicted for forgery, theft

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A real estate agent that defrauded homeowners and potential renters has been found guilty in the case.

David Garden was found guilty of 22 counts on Wednesday evening, including corrupt business influence, 11 counts of forgery and 10 counts of theft, all felonies.

The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office said Garden operated under several business names including Star Homes, Inc., Garden Homes Realty, Christian Home Realty, and Five Star Realty.

“David Garden took advantage of vulnerable individuals who were facing foreclosure of their homes for his personal profit, displacing them and renting the homes without the owners’ permission. He promised homes to families looking for rental residences, taking their money knowing that they could never live there because the homes were in unlivable condition,” Marion County Prosecutor Terry Curry stated. “This case involved a lengthy investigation encompassing a significant period of time and number of victims. We appreciate the cooperation of the Office of the Attorney General and IMPD in this successful conviction.”

Garden was arrested in May 2014. More than 40 people said Garden had scammed them out of money.

Garden is set to be sentenced on May 25.
